Region’s volunteers recognised

Volunteers were celebrated right across the country this week as part of National Volunteer Week — and the Busselton-Dunsborough district was no exception

On Wednesday, the City of Busselton and the Busselton- Dunsborough Volunteer Centre co-hosted the Busselton- Dunsborough Volunteer of the Year Awards, recognising the tireless volunteers who dedicate their time to services, events, fundraising efforts and countless other causes.

Addressing attendees, Busselton Mayor Grant Henley said volunteers were “a precious resource in our community, underpinning the delivery of many services and events, as well as fundraising for a host of worthwhile causes”.

He highlighted the community’s response to the recent Old Butter Factory fire, describing it as a “great example of the community and its volunteers working together”.

“As devastating as the fire was, the level of immediate support was overwhelming,” Cr Henley said.

“The challenges faced and the challenges moving forward have demonstrated how collectively, volunteering and the need to volunteer impacts positively on our community.

“This sense of giving is truly inspiring.”

Nominations across five categories were assessed by the Volunteer of the Year Awards selection committee.

With the region’s strong track record for volunteers, volunteer centre co-ordinator Carl Holroyd acknowledged there were some difficult decisions to make.

The awards were held in conjunction with volunteer week — the theme of which was “give a little, get a lot” — and Mr Holroyd said it was a good opportunity for people to consider volunteering.

“The importance of volunteers cannot be underestimated,” he said.

“Some of our most vital community services, elderly care and transport, health and mental health, rural firefighting services and environmental awareness programs, rely heavily on a volunteer workforce.”

The event was supported by Volunteering WA, Lotterywest, Vasse MLA Libby Mettam, Forrest MHR Nola Marino, the Busselton-Dunsborough Times, and award sponsors.
