Minister pressed on airport

The progression of the Busselton Margaret River Airport was a key discussion point for local tourism operators when they met with Federal Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Steven Ciobo yesterday.

Mr Ciobo met representatives from the Busselton Jetty, Margaret River Busselton Tourism Association, Margaret River Wines and the Chamber of Commerce and Industries, among others, in Busselton on Thursday morning, when uncertainty regarding airport funding was raised by multiple attendees.

Pressed on whether the Federal Government would make up funding for the airport if it was pulled by Labor in the upcoming State Budget, Mr Ciobo said the Federal Government had already fulfilled its commitment and urged Labor to do the same.

“The airport upgrade is obviously critical and having the State Government not follow through is problematic,” he said.

“In the interim we will continue to put maximum pressure on the State Government to follow through on the commitment.”

Forrest MHR Nola Marino said as the Federal Government did not yet have an idea of how much the State Government would be contributing, it did not know what it would be dealing with in terms of additional funding.
