Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran suicide
The death of any Australian Defence Force member or veteran is one death too many and a tragedy felt by all Australians. That is what the Government is seeking to establish a permanent National Commission to proactively deal with all issues faced by the veteran community. This week the Government has taken another step in announcing that we will seek to establish a Royal Commission into Defence and Veterans Suicide. The Royal Commission will complement the permanent National Commission and both will lead to long-term change to ensure our veterans get the support they need. Read more here.
Supporting Jobs through HomeBuilder Extension
The Morrison Government is providing all successful applicants in the HomeBuilder Programme with an extension. Under the extension, construction on projects can now commence within 18 months rather than six. This extension will remove the stress for families and relieve pressure on the construction sector. The HomeBuilder program was designed to protect tradies’ jobs and according to Master Builders Australia, the programme has supported 250,000 jobs and increased economic activity by around $80 billion. Australian families are already benefiting with more than 121,000 applications. Read more here.
Quarantine-Free Travel Between Australia and New Zealand Commences
Flights have started this week under the Trans-Tasman travel bubble. Trans-Tasman quarantine free travel is a world-leading arrangement that opens up travel in a COVID safe way. It reflects the sustained efforts to date of both countries in managing the virus. The new Trans-Tasman travel bubble supports families and friends to connect with each other, and opens major economic opportunities for Australian businesses. Read more here.
Appointment of Vaccine Operations Coordinator
National Cabinet this week welcomed the appointment of Commodore Eric Young, CSC, RAN as the Operations Coordinator for the Vaccine Operations Centre. Commodore Young will help coordinate the vaccine rollout with the states and territories, general practices, logistics providers and the broader medical sector. He joins a long list of ADF personnel who have assisted with Australia’s pandemic response. Read more here.
