Forrest MHR optimistic about freight

Freight capacities at the BusseltonMargaret River Airport could pave the way for future development and international flights, according to Forrest MHR Nola Marino.

The comments were made during the MP’s tour of the electorate this week, during which Busselton, Harvey and Waroona received millions of dollars in funding for a range of projects.

While a decision is yet to be made about the operation of flights between the upgraded airport and the Eastern States, Mrs Marino was optimistic about the airport’s capabilities on an international scale.

The Federal Government this week announced about $1.5 million funding towards a new air-freight hub at the airport, which would include the construction of seven fully serviced industrial lots.

Mrs Marino said a dedicated freight hub at the airport was crucial to the South West, given it would also create direct access to China and South East Asia.

“The freight capacity gives our local producers and farmers the capacity to get their products into markets all around Asia directly,” she said.

“I just think there’s almost endless opportunities here.

Margaret River’s already an internationally known brand for tourism purposes and the freight that comes both ways will do more than just get our produce out directly in the market.”

Vasse MLA and shadow tourism minister Libby Mettam welcomed the Federal funding but said further commitment from the State Government was vital to the project.
