Dawn service attracts big crowd

NEARLY 400 people arrived before the sun on April 25 to commemorate the fallen at the Yarloop dawn service on Anzac Day.

Forrest MHR Nola Marino made a moving address on the impact of war on families and the story of her mother’s husband Private Jack Leonard who did not return from World War II.

Harvey Senior High School student Molly Craigie and Yarloop Primary School students Gypsie Ashboth and Luchee Smedley read poems and told the story of the Anzacs. Veteran Harry Blackburn spoke the Ode of Remembrance.

Following the traditional gunfire breakfast in the Yarloop Bushfire Brigade station, retired Naval Lieutenant Kingsley Klau presented the brigade with photos from all 14 years he attended the Yarloop dawn service, the originals having been lost in the 2016 bushfire.

Long service medals were also presented to members of the brigade with research by volunteers having restored their records.
