New environmental measures

All readers of this newspaper would know that proposed mining developments near our valuable water resources and ecosystems require thorough examination.

In the coming weeks in Federal Parliament I will be supporting legislation that establishes an Independent Expert Scientific Committee on coal seam gas and large mining development.

I believe a scientific investigation which is independent and thorough would go a long way to develop proper planning protection.

The committee will investigate the process and potential risks of mining – including hydraulic fracturing or ‘fracking’ – on groundwater assets.

These assets are vital for the health of the South West, which is one of only two internationally recognised biodiversity hotspots in Australia.

Cyber safety in Augusta

I will be in Augusta all day on June 14 to provide cyber-safety forums for schools and the community.

Anyone interested in attending the community event should please call and register their interest with my office.

Should local people have any other issues they need assistance with, and would like to discuss with me on my visit, please contact my office to organise a time to meet.

Budget blowouts

In 2007 when it came to office Labor inherited $70 billion in the bank, and a $20 billion surplus.

This year’s budget will extend national debt to a record of $300 billion which will cost all Australians $22 million a day in interest.
